Easy to Make Stromboli
While searching for Weight Watchers recipes, I found this stromboli recipe at Keeping on Point. This is the same recipe used for the infamous WW bagels. If you have ever been on any variation of a Weight Watchers plan, you have heard about the 2-point bagels.
This is a great meal to make on the weekends and is perfect for customization. If you have kids that like to help in the kitchen, this can be a fun meal to make together. And everyone in the family can choose their own ingredients.
Step by Step Instructions
Begin by preheating the oven to 450 degrees.
Next, slice your onions. We opted to use red onions, but you can use a yellow or sweet onion, depending on your preference.
For the dough, combine one cup of non-fat yogurt with one cup of self-rising flour. Mix well with your hands and knead the dough. To make handling the dough easier, have a small bowl of flour nearby to keep your hands and the surface dusted with flour to prevent sticking. Using a rolling pin, roll the flour out into a rectangle. I am not a baker and have not mastered the dough-rolling pin technique. As you can see from the photos, the rectangle is not perfect, and luckily for me, the shape of the dough does not affect the final product’s taste.
The Fun Part
After the dough is rolled out into a thin rectangle shape, layer the ingredients; black forest ham, pepperoni, hard salami, sliced onions, slices of provolone, and shredded mozzarella.
This is the part where you can personalize your stromboli. You can add ingredients such as pepperoncini, jalapenos, different styles of sliced meats, and more or fewer cheeses. Let your creative juices flow, but be careful not to overstuff because you still have to roll this thing up and bake it.
Once the ingredients are in place, roll up the dough to enclose all the ingredients into a secure little dough pocket. Then brush the tops with a lightly beaten egg and add the Italian seasoning and garlic powder; this is a crucial step to help brown the tops.
Bake at 450 degrees for 15-20 minutes. The stromboli will be ready when the cheese in the center is melted and the top is golden brown.
Serve with a warm marinara sauce for dipping. Click here for an easy homemade marinara sauce.
